Public Toilet Hygiene Monitor

Abstract:

A real world problem that urgently requires addressing, is the widespread hygienic issues in frequently used public restrooms. The impacts of highly used bathrooms being unregulated, and unhygienic bathrooms is severe; it induces the accumulation of harmful bacterias, which negatively impacts goal 3 of the SDGs (Good health and wellbeing) as it results in the spread/potential outbreak of harmful diseases, particularly gastrointestinal, diarrhoeal and waterborne diseases. Additionally, the repugnant state of countless public restrooms significantly hinder the progression of goal 6 of the SDGs (Clean water and sanitation) as public toilets serve as the primary source of easily accessible public sanitation.
When members of the public need to perform tasks such as cleaning their hands or face, relieve themselves, or perform any religious practices such as wudu, the level of sanitation prevalent in several public restrooms renders these hygiene practices futile.
