Mosquito Breeding Site Detector

Abstract:

Vector-borne diseases, specifically those caused by mosquitos, such as dengue, malaria and Zika virus remain a major public health concern in tropical and subtropical regions. One of the primary causes of mosquito outbreaks is the presence of stagnant water in open containers, drains or low-lying areas, which serve as ideal breeding sites for mosquitoes. Currently, health workers rely on manual inspection to identify and eliminate these breeding sites, which is time-consuming, labor-intensive and prone to human error. Many sites go unnoticed until mosquito populations have already grown, increasing the risk of disease transmission. The problem, therefore, is the lack of an automated, reliable and scalable system to detect stagnant water early and alert health authorities or take action before it becomes a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Additionally, the solution will achieve two main Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Firstly, it will help with Good Health and Well-Being as it will reduce disease transmission and prevent mosquito-borne diseases. Secondly, it will strive towards Clean Water and Sanitation as people will be educated to drink water from safer sources.
