Cisco Smart Lighting Project

Abstract:

Our project is a Smart Streetlight Network designed to make street lighting more efficient, automated, and environmentally friendly. The system uses IoT components such as motion sensors, timers, and LED indicators in Cisco Packet Tracer to simulate how streetlights can automatically respond to movement during night-time hours. Each light activates only when motion is detected and turns off after a set period of inactivity, conserving energy while maintaining safety. The lights are independently controlled but monitored through a central control panel to ensure security and prevent unauthorised access. By integrating network segmentation and documentation, our project demonstrates how intelligent systems can enhance sustainability, reduce energy consumption, and improve the management of public infrastructure.

Our Smart Streetlight Network project addresses several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by focusing on sustainability, innovation, and safety. It directly supports SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities by improving urban infrastructure through intelligent lighting that activates only when needed, reducing energy waste and light pollution. It also aligns with SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production, as the system uses sensors and timers to ensure energy-efficient operation and responsible resource use. By incorporating IoT technology and network segmentation using Cisco Packet Tracer, the project promotes SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure, showcasing how modern technology can create smarter, safer, and more sustainable environments. Overall, this project demonstrates how innovation in automation and networking can help build cleaner and more efficient cities.
